How to Sign a PDF Online

Print, sign, scan, send is a ritual that wastes a surprising amount of time. Signing directly in the file removes three of those four steps.

The short answer

Open the PDF, draw or upload your signature, position it where it belongs, and download the signed document. No printing or scanning involved.

Draw or upload a signature and place it anywhere.

Step by step

  1. 1Open the document you need to signScroll to the signature line so you can see exactly where it should go.
  2. 2Create your signatureDraw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or upload a photograph of a signature you have written on paper.
  3. 3Place and size itPosition it on the line and scale it sensibly. A signature that overwhelms the field looks wrong on a document someone will file.
  4. 4Download the signed PDFThe signature becomes part of the page, so it appears for anyone who opens the file.

Drawing versus uploading

Drawing is quicker and fine for routine paperwork. On a trackpad it rarely looks much like your real signature, which usually does not matter.

Uploading gives a more faithful result: sign a blank sheet in dark ink, photograph it in good light, and upload that. A PNG with a transparent background sits most cleanly on the page.

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

In many countries, including India under the Information Technology Act and the United States under the ESIGN Act, electronic signatures are recognised for most ordinary agreements.

Some categories are commonly excluded — wills and certain property instruments among them — and specific counterparties may insist on a certificate-based digital signature rather than a drawn one.

This is general information rather than legal advice. If a document genuinely matters, confirm what the recipient requires before signing.

After signing

Adding a password to the signed file is worth considering before emailing anything sensitive.

Keep the unsigned original. If a detail changes you will want to sign a corrected copy rather than edit around a signature already on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to print the document?

No. The signature is added directly to the PDF.

Can I use a photo of my handwritten signature?

Yes. Upload it as a PNG or JPG — a transparent PNG blends most neatly with the page.

Can I sign on a phone?

Yes, and drawing with a finger on a touchscreen usually looks better than a trackpad attempt.

Is the signature secure?

It is drawn into the page. For tamper-evidence, add password protection, or use a certificate-based digital signature if the recipient requires one.
